Short Term Impact
Atricle written after the battle endedNearly two million soldiers and civilians were killed during the battle of Stalingrad. It was eventually won by the Russians on February 2, 1943 when General Paulus surrendered. Germany had finally been trapped and surrounded and had no choice but to give up. Hitler wouldn't let his men retreat which only furthered the amount of men and supplies lost. The loss was devastating to Germany. Losing around 91,000 men and tons of supplies including 8,000 machine guns and 90,000 rifles. Not to mention Hitler's confidence in his armies was completely shot. The Russians had maintained the possession of their beloved city and had gained a large amount of supplies. They did lose many men in the battle; however, it was still a major win not only for the Russians, but for the Allies as well.
